Are there signs of a potential impetigo infection in you or your child? Through the Pharmacy First Service, people one year of age and older can now receive free NHS impetigo advice and treatment without visiting their general practitioner. Make an online appointment.
Your eligibility and suitability for the Free NHS Pharmacy First Service will be assessed by the pharmacist. In certain situations, your symptoms might not need a therapy. Additionally, the pharmacist may recommend you to your general practitioner or another provider for additional evaluation and treatment if they discover that your symptoms point to a more serious infection or disease.
 

What is Impetigo?

Impetigo is a skin infection that spreads easily. With therapy, it normally goes away in 7–10 days and is not very dangerous. Although it can happen to anyone, young children are more likely to experience it.
 

What causes Impetigo?

Bacterial infections are the cause of impetigo. Staphylococcus aureus and group A Streptococcus are the two primary causing microorganisms. The skin is vulnerable to impetigo infection when the barrier is compromised.

It is recommended that you keep any cuts, scratches or insect bites to the skin clean by for example washing it with soap and warm water. Get treatment for any skin condition that can lead to broken skin, such as eczema. Speak with your doctor or pharmacist for further advice.
 

What are impetigo's primary symptoms and indicators?

Impetigo is often a mild infection that can happen anywhere on the body and affect anyone. But it is most frequently found:

* Close to the nose and mouth
* On arms and legs

Blisters and painful red sores are the initial symptoms. Within a few days, these rupture, leaving behind crusty, brown, and yellow areas.
 

What choices does the Pharmacy First Service offer for treating impetigo?

If it is clinically appropriate and you fulfill the eligibility requirements, you will be provided a treatment to aid in your recovery from the impetigo infection after speaking with one of our pharmacists.

You may be offered one of the various possible therapies. Among them are:
Treatment for localized non-bullous impetigo with hydrogen peroxide cream.
Antibiotic Cream – Fusidic acid cream for the treatment of non-bullous impetigo.
Antibiotic Tablets/capsules/oral solution – For treatment of widespread non-bullous impetigo.
*If you are issued a prescription medicine, you will pay the standard NHS prescription charge unless you’re eligible for free prescriptions.

The pharmacist will provide an alternate treatment or refer you to another service if the Pharmacy First Service therapy is not appropriate or you do not meet the eligibility requirements.
